Navtech Radar was formed by a team of engineers in 1999 to develop millimetre wave radar sensor solutions for industrial applications.  With roots that can be traced back to Oxford and Sydney Universities in the early 1990’s, the experience and expertise of the Navtech engineers in this field is unique.  Navtech Radar now arguably leads the world in the development of commercial off-the-shelf radar sensors at 76 to 77 GHz frequencies.

The Navtech Radar industrial sensor is world renowned as the radar sensor of choice for outdoor driverless vehicle navigation and obstacle detection applications. Customers include a number of National Government research departments and international corporations such as Boeing, Caterpillar and Danaher Motion.

In recent years the company has adapted its sensor capability in new market applications further demonstrating its world leading capability to deliver effective millimetre wave radar sensor solutions for outdoor commercial applications. Notable ‘world firsts’ are:

  1. The first driverless straddle carrier operational port in the world in Brisbane, Australia (Navtech Radar I200P used as the primary vehicle navigation sensor).
  2. The first quay crane anti-collision safety system using MMW radar (3 systems installed and working on operational cranes for Bristol Port Authority, UK).
  3. The first operational airport ground surface movement system using MMW radar, which received CCA approval at East Midland's Airport in July 2006.
  4. The first commercial off-the-shelf 77GHz MMW radar security system sales in USA, Italy, Qatar, Poland, Ireland and UK including Heathrow.
  5. The first 77GHz MMW radar installation for motorway incident detection and hard shoulder monitoring, deployed on the M42 for the UK Highways Agency, April 2007.

The intellectual property and ownership of the technology is vested in the company, which is privately owned by its employees.  The company’s unique skills and experience in the combined disciplines of digital signal processing and software engineering make it possible to develop sensors that fulfil customer performance expectations and that are robust, reliable and affordable. Navtech performs stringent factory acceptance tests on all its radar products. Component manufacture is sub-contracted locally in the UK.  Navtech is therefore a truly British advanced technology company with genuinely British made products.

Located in a countryside setting in Oxfordshire which is perfect for range testing the radar sensors, Navtech’s main facility is only 50 miles and 50 minutes by train (Didcot Parkway) from London.
